Hans HOLBEIN der Juengere (Hans Holbein the Younger) (1497 - 1543) "Kinderalphabet P" Original woodcut, fragment from the graphic kit of Strabo's work "Geographicorum Commentarii" printed and published in Basel by Valentin Curio in 1523. Nice copy with the usual text on the reverse, complete with framing lines and with a small white border, in an almost perfect general state of conservation. In the background scene you can see two cherubs, of whom with their heads surrounded by a laurel wreath, playing with a newborn baby in a cradle. The putto on the right holds a container in his hand that could be interpreted as a bottle, while the other seems to hold a pan that contains food for the baby. For a complete view of the edition of Strabone's text, refer to https://books.google.it/books/about/Geographicorum_commentarii from which the attached page comes. Bibliography: Butera "ABC of Bodies: some figured alphabets of the 16th century .." in Intrecci dell'arte n ° 2 2013 page 55. Butsch “Buecher Ornamentik der Renaissance” Munich 1922 page 68 and plate 60.
